“Next to Normal”

One of the things that’s mighty nice about working for KPCC is that they indulge me in my interest in the world beyond environment coverage. I’m a not-so-secret theater geek; my first show was at the Golden Gate Theater in San Francisco, when I saw Tommy Tune and Charles “Honi” Coles and Lucie Arnaz in “My One & Only.” Unlike a lot of theater geeks, I’m not any good at it myself; I was in musicals and plays growing up, but I tended to get cast in parts that didn’t interfere with basketball practice.

I got to talk to Brian Yorkey, who co-wrote “Next to Normal” with Tom Kitt, for a while the other day. The local stories focused on an earlier writing relationship he had with Eric Garcetti – something I learned while sitting in the yard belonging to my friend Joy Gorman, another Columbia Varsity Show veteran.

Brian had a lot of interesting things to say both about “Next to Normal” and that didn’t fit into a story. As soon as I can figure out how to post them, I’m going to do that.
